Interest Topics
For literacy during my practicum we used Fountas and Pinnell, but the engagement for students at a grade 8 level wasn't there as the program is geared towards younger grade levels. In order to encourage reading and writing literacy to a greater degree, the implementation of high interest topics for the students was used. I created and designed lessons based on a topic of interest and found articles and resources related to that topic. I focused on the influence that movies play on us. We looked at aspects of movies (such as colours, music, shapes/geometry, and product placement) that influence how we feel or act and whether or not it is ethical that movies can have such an impact on us. After each article we watched a few movie clips and discussed what they were seeing based on the component the reading was focusing on.
